Understanding Christianity: Are Miracles Real? (Why Hasn't God Healed Me?)
Psalms 103:3 ...who healeth all thy diseases
Faith in God very often gets rejected or diminished when our expectations go unmet. Why does this happen? Am I being punished? Does God care? Do I have enough faith? Does God have the power to heal me? Does God even exist? All are questions people grapple with when facing difficult circumstances. If you haven’t read my first article, Understanding Christianity: How Is God Love When Evil Persists?, it will give you more context about God and the existence of evil; from which comes disease.
In this article, I want to take you deeper into answering the question, Why Hasn’t God Healed Me? from scriptures in the Bible that gives us explanations about healing and sometimes the lack of it and through my own, personal experience.
Psalms 103:3 says that God heals “…all thy diseases”. Does that mean Type 1 Diabetes? Does that mean Glaucoma? What does that mean when people are living with all kinds of incurable diseases?
The best scripture I can give you to conceptualize the answer to the latter question comes from Ecclesiastes 3:1 KJV – To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
– Ecclesiastes 3:1 KJV
One example relating to that passage of scripture comes to mind from John 9: 1–3.
[1] And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. [2] And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? [3] Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
In other words, God allowed the man to be born blind and live in that condition for the purpose of Jesus performing a miracle in giving him sight; which, could not have been done by any other means in that day. Was God being mean or evil by allowing the man to be born blind and in that condition for so long? Read what happens next and then I’ll give an answer to this question.
[4] I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. [5] As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. [6] When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, [7] And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. [8] The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? [9] Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.
– John 9:4-9 KJV
The miracle Jesus performed was met with some skepticism. How convincing would it have been if the man was only blind for a week or a month or one year after he was born? As Jesus said in verses 3 and 4, and found elsewhere in the Bible, God was giving proof that Jesus was sent by Him to fulfill His plan of salvation. This miracle was pre-ordained by God so people could and would believe that Jesus is the Messiah, sent by God, to save the world.
So, that’s one example of why some people are living with disease.
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
– Ecclesiastes 3:1 KJV
In the Bible, we see different ways in which Jesus or even prophets healed people. In 2 Kings, chapter 5, Naaman refused the instruction of the Prophet Elisha to wash in the Jordan River to be healed from leprosy. So, he was not healed, until he changed his mind and followed Elisha’s instructions. This is to say, sometimes healings come through specific responsibilities given to receive healing.
An example of this in my own life is when I was on the verge of losing my vision due to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and corneal erosion, in the early 2000s. I was told by a plant-based food educator that the abundance of processed food I was eating was contributing to my condition. She was right. After stopping that habit, my condition improved. Subsequently, a Diabetic Specialist told me to eat dark, raw, leafy green vegetables every day to treat my condition. I did that and my condition improved to nearly 100%. The remaining issue was to keep my blood sugar levels regulated to prevent flare ups. Today, I read with 20/20 vision and no trace of my preceding conditions through Ocular Coherence Tomography scans of my eyeballs.
(The above image, taken about 2006, is after I started getting my sight back and could withstand light entering my eye. The primary damage was in my left eye).

Final thoughts: Can God heal Type 1 Diabetes, Glaucoma and other “incurable diseases” without surgery? I’ll leave you with three Bible verses to consider, as of the date, January 17, 2025 when this article was written.
Matthew 19:26 KJV
But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
Ephesians 3:20-21 KJV
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, [21] Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
